She is a true legend in Cincinnati and continues to inspire and surprise the music community time after time." I'm super excited to share a follow-up interview that CincyMusic did with me this past March 2021, on the last day of Women's Herstory Month. Just like the last one four years ago, I have A LOT of things to say. Check out what I've been doing these last four years, what's up for the future, and some other intriguing topics!

https://cincymusic.com/blog/2021/03/women-in-cincinnati-music-abiyah

(P.S. I may have mentioned a few lady friends in Cincinnati who I admire. )
Abiyahtag:abiyah.com,2005:Post/60497332019-12-30T00:00:00-05:002019-12-30T00:01:53-05:00NEW SONG RELEASE: Abiyah Ends the Decade with a Self-Introspective Melodic Journey to Empowerment in Electronic/Trip Hop-Tinged Single ‘Mirror Flower'
Bookending the February 2019 release of ‘Champion Plaque’, her genre-blending single with Ceschi Ramos, Cincinnati-based songwriter and vocalist Abiyah has released her next single, ‘Mirror Flower’, to end the year and the decade. On this outing, Abiyah lyrically explores some of her inner emotional contemplations and how to navigate them on a journey to strength, self-empowerment, and happiness, backed by synth-driven melodies produced by electronic musician Warren Harrison. In both its thematic lyrical content and flowing vibed-out music, somewhat reminiscent of UK trip hop group Massive Attack, ’Mirror Flower’ is highly relatable with strong crossover potential.

‘Mirror Flower’ is available for FREE download (pay-what-you-want) on Bandcamp at https://abiyahmusic.bandcamp.com/track/mirror-flower, as well as all digital streaming platforms.

As many of Abiyah’s songs do, ‘Mirror Flower’ has a story about ‘connections’ behind it, this one of the full-circle variety. In 2002, Abiyah performed at the inaugural MidPoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, as did the (then) husband-wife darkwave/trip hop electronic duo Hungry Lucy, comprised of producer Warren Harrison and Christa Belle. Abiyah and Hungry Lucy ended up meeting on the same multi-band/genre bills for the next few years after that, and became familiar and friendly with each other. Seventeen years later, in 2019, Abiyah and Harrison collaborated on a song for the first time. That song would become ‘Mirror Flower’.

Although Harrison had heard Abiyah’s music over the years, it wasn’t until a chance encounter with her in December 2018 in a randomly-selected band put together for a Freestore Foodbank fundraiser that he came to fully learn of Abiyah’s singing capabilities. They convened in February 2019 at his home studio to start getting to work. Harrison selected a beat he thought would fit Abiyah’s vibe, and she began sussing out a chorus and verses, in a one-and-done stream-of-consciousness style, while he looped the track in the background. A few months later, they reconvened and Abiyah fine-tuned the lyrics and melodies as Harrison recorded.

‘The zone of feeling like you know, but it don’t feel right.’

What appeared in ‘Mirror Flower’ as a result of this songwriting approach was a somber and contemplative look at self, with Abiyah also allowing an opportunity to find a path for herself to empowerment.

'Inside your time is overloaded how you see you in the mirror, flower
Roses golden in the fire
Crying out now, you stand up right now
How you be you in the mirror, flower
Roses golden in the fire.'

The cover art, by DC-based artist Tiffani Gomez (who also created the artwork for Abiyah’s 2018 release ‘Crylike/Masked’), mirrors and reflects the themes found in ‘Mirror Flower’ with a complex simplicity of symbolism. Broken, yet colorful, stained glass mirror pieces present a sense of the brokenness we sometimes feel when looking at ourselves in the mirror, literally and figuratively. Yet, they also resemble flower petals which can give us comfort, peace, beauty and strength. The black hole in the center of the image signifies the darkness that can be present within many of us. Even then, it is still surrounded by calming colors designed to uplift.
Abiyahtag:abiyah.com,2005:Post/56495492019-02-19T00:27:54-05:002019-02-19T00:27:54-05:00'Champion Plaque': A Song About Inauthentic People Featuring Ceschi Ramos
On the heels of her resurgent September 2018 release, the ‘Crylike/Masked’ electro dancehall punk double A-side single, Cincinnati-based songwriter and vocalist Abiyah puts forth a collaborative single with fellow like-minded genre-blender rapper/singer/guitarist Ceschi Ramos (based in New Haven, CT). ‘Champion Plaque’, will hit Bandcamp (free download and/or pay-what-you-want), as well as digital streaming providers, on February 19. Click HERE to stream/download on Bandcamp. In accordance with both Abiyah’s and Ceschi’s inherent penchants for genre-blending and blurring, and backgrounds in alternative hip hop, ‘Champion Plaque’ can best be termed a psych, post-punk and reggae-influenced left-field battle rap with melodic undertones.

'Champion Plaque' seeks to call attention to inauthentic people and situations with them in which we may sometimes find ourselves. Inauthenticity can manifest in a variety of forms: purposeful ethical lapses, dishonesty with ourselves and others, privilege, and shady music dealings, among others. 'Champion', in this context, does not relate to ego or self-righteousness; rather, it is an exhortation for all of us to be 'winners' by being our most genuine, honest, and ethical selves. The cover art, by Cincinnati-based illustrator/painter/muralist Derek Toebbe offers a strong visual representation of this theme. In it, he flips the idea of a wolf in sheep's clothing by presenting a sheep in wolf's clothing, as if to say that the world is pretty harsh, and people are pretty harsh, and sometimes we have to put up a hard exterior so we are not taken advantage of by the aforementioned inauthentic people; in reality, we can be peaceful and friendly, like a lamb. The laurel wreath, consisting of an olive branch and an oak branch, plays on the 'champion' connotation while, as the sheep's folded arms indicate, suggesting that authenticity requires that we not rest on our laurels. The olive and oak branches represent peace and strength, respectively, just like the lamb and the wolf.

The original version of 'Champion Plaque' was produced by St. Petersburg, Russia-based producer Possible Address, the third song of Abiyah's for which he has done so in recent years. Because music unites when leaders divide. Bay Area-based MC/producer OneWerd handled the remix duties, presenting a stark contrast to the original's slow-ride psych-tinged elements with an EDM club banger.
Abiyahtag:abiyah.com,2005:Post/54486722018-09-29T13:08:56-04:002018-09-29T13:08:56-04:00New Electro-Dancehall Punk Double A-Side Single, 'Crylike/Masked', Just Released

On the heels of last year's 'Boom' cassingle release with collaborator Evolve comes 'Crylilke/Masked', my new doubleA-side single. TWO songs. ONE single. BOTH bangers. Electro-dancehall punk with a tinge of new wave!

Armed with a rich punk ethos and an intimate knowledge of dancehall, avant-hip hop and alternative rock, this release spotlights Abiyah's journeys even further into uncharted territory. If you had to characterize this, electronic dancehall punk fits the bill and the songs find her in league with Santigold, MIA, Rituals of Mine and Grimes.

The songs on the single were produced by Dave Rohs, formerly of Cincinnati electro-synth rock group Chalk, and backing vocals were provided by Dana Hamblen of Darlene, Fairmount Girls and Culture Queer. The cover art for the single came as a result of a chance meeting and growing friendship between artist Tiffani Gomez (tiffanigomez.tumblr.com) and Abiyah at the Afropunk Festival a few years back. Recorded and mixed by Jeremy Lesniak, and mastered by MJC at FilthyBroke Recordings.

'Boom' is my first collaborative effort with my fellow Cincinnati alternative hip hop pioneer, and friend of 15 years, Evolve. 'Boom' is offered in cassingle (cassette single) format, as well as digital download, and serves to inspire overcoming obstacles through self-motivation and self-improvement...with a unique and melodic fury. Snag your cassette (w/digital download AND Abiyah and Evolve stickers AND a 2.25" Abiyah button!), or just a digital download, over at Abiyah's Bandcamp page on the cheap!

Offered on high-quality chrome cassingle in two versions, one produced by Oakland-based DJ HALO (with post-production rhythm cuts by DJ Rare Groove), the other produced by St. Petersburg, Russia-based Possible Address, with additional production by Evolve. While containing futuristic elements that are decidedly not reminiscent of the 90s-golden-era vibe, the 'Boom' cassingle does hearken to the days when the B-side housed instrumental versions for the people; featured on Side B are slightly-tweaked instrumental versions of the Side A full versions. 'Boom' crosses over into DIY, alternative hip hop and avant-garde/experimental audiences, while still maintaining a sensibility that transcends classification and can work just as well as a club banger (Side A2) as it would as a backdrop to a backyard house party (Side A1).

'On “Boom,” the pair vocally weave lines around each other with a dizzying chemistry. Evolve smoothly and skillfully lays down rhymes that decry competition with others in favor of finding one’s own unique voice. Abiyah’s similarly themed words about guiding and not following are delivered in multiple ways — straight bars, slinky sung melodies and Dancehall chants.'

Check out the full article here.
Abiyahtag:abiyah.com,2005:Post/48031142017-08-04T16:59:15-04:002017-08-04T16:59:15-04:00Interview with Dave Wakeling of The English Beat/General Public
The fine folks at Ghettoblaster Magazine recently presented me with the opportunity to interview Dave Wakeling of The English Beat and General Public. A beautifully-executed large format publication produced locally by Deogracias Lerma and Kami Gunn Lerma, Polly Magazine features interviews/profiles of local and national arts and culture tastemakers, I am so honored and grateful to be included in this issue, along with the likes of mixologist extraordinaire Molly Wellmann, chef Jean-Robert de Cavel, photographer Michael Wilson, Victoria Morgan of the Cincinnati Ballet, cinematographer Larry Fong, photographer/musician Maurice Mattei, MadTree Brewing and more.

The absolute highlight of my evening? When Deo's and Kami's daughter Corinne (lower left in the photo with the young ladies) and her friends bum-rushed me to autograph their copies. <3 They have no idea how much that meant to me.
Cincinnati-based indie hip hop/cross-genre vocalist/MC Abiyah and Brooklyn-based electro-soul vocalist Corina Corina join forces to embark on the First Ladies Tour, a 12-date tour from the East Coast to the Midwest in March 2014. One of the few entirely female indie hip hop tour bills in recent memory, these women bring a strong work ethic, beautiful vocals, a diverse range of musical styles, and energetic performances to their broad-ranging fanbase. The tour begins on March 19 at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn to celebrate the release of Corina Corina’s sophomore album, “The Free Way,” and ends on March 31 in Lexington, KY.
